Let's examine various strategies used in nature to create healthier ag systems that will not only be more productive, grown through the urban/rural continuum, & create a lighter footprint, but will be more accessable to those who are in need.See More

Integrated Food Production Systems

Thumbnail
This is the model I worked on while working for John Todd in 2001. It is very similar to what Will Allen was doing concurrently. We were growing many species of plants for many different reasons (food, fiber, fish/livestock feed, ornamentals, etc), about 5 species of fish (bait fish, food fish, ornamentals), 5 species of fungi (using local organic straw as a growing medium), vermiculture (for fish feed and to sell), and compost. We were right next to Magic Hat Brewery and were using spent…See More

UN Integrated Ag Model from Java

Thumbnail
One of John Todd's Mini-Arks from his days with the New Alchemy Institute. Check out the link below to my post on LocalFoodCleveland.org that describes how integrated ag system models in Java can be modified to our climate. I stress that with all of our blessed available fresh water, we should be integrative more aquaculture, aquaponics, and hydroponics into our systems.  …See More

Bucky's Amazing Fish-Shaped Car

 R. Buckminster Fuller was way ahead of his time. His nature-inspired designs were revolutionary and we STILL haven't caught up with his dymaxion concepts. British architect Norman Foster has rebuilt Bucky's 1933 (yes 1933!) Dymaxion Car. The Dymaxion House (1929!) that Bucky developed was designed to purify its own water, clean its own air and waste, use less material, and be recyclable. As I said... we still haven't caught up. Incidentally, my mentor John Todd (of New Alchemy Institute /…See More

Scientists Probe 'Glue' That Keeps Oysters Together

From today's NPR Morning Edition.A research scientist talks about calcium carbonate/protein reef building glue that points to the possibilities of new adhesives and non-adhesive surfaces. Also, bone-repairing ideas.  http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130011204See More

The Magical Alchemy of Compost

What are the elements on which life relies? The breath of spirit. Sunlight. Air. Water. Earth. Just like fresh water, good arable soil is a limited resource with an astounding, almost unbelievable capacity for the ability to recycle, regenerate, renew...The thin skin of soil on the earth that supports us, for too long has been treated as inert - as a mere commodity. This thin layer of highly productive life, from the micro to macroscopic, has the ability to break down that which has died, and…See More
