Some of the new residents found on Dike 14:

- Minks, which are considered an environmental indicator
- Giant goldenrod, which can reach a height of 8 feet and serve as home to many insects, including praying mantises.
- Ruby-throated hummingbirds, important pollinators.
- Red admirals butterflies, which are tame and sometimes land on people.
- Northern harrier, a ground nester and raptor that is listed as an endangered species in Ohio
- Northern brown snake, a nonvenomous snake which does not bite.

What can we learn from these organisms?

Chris,
that's exactly right. Have you had a chance to visit this place?

This is a great ecosystem to study and use as a model for restoration projects. . .from literal restoration of natural areas to more figurative social, economic and industrial restoration projects. These organisms work together to create opportunity from where there once was none. Their system is also evolving (fairly quickly too) so one can witness it in real time e.g. months, years etc. versus more established systems.
